Peter King, gun control, and deranged killers

Boehner opposes new gun-control bill – fortunately

Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) announced plans Tuesday to introduce legislation prohibiting people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of members of Congress.

King, who has previously called for the removal of illegal guns from the streets, made the announcement alongside New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation’s loudest voices for stricter gun laws.

King said the legislation is not intended only for the safety of government officials but also to protect the public. He said elected officials are not necessarily more important than constituents, but by protecting them in this way, they would feel safer in meeting federal officials at public events.

“The fact is they do represent the people who elect them, and it’s essential, if we’re going to continue to have contact, that the public who are at these meetings are ensured of their own safety,” King said.

I’m stunned. Is King simply blind, did he not read any of the reports about the killer, or is he so in the grip of the anti-self-defense lobby that he’ll take any excuse to pander to them?

Does ANYONE actually think that ANY gun law would have stopped this deranged killer from doing his deadly deed?

This isn’t closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. This is more like opening the barn door in the hope that the horse you’ve already beat to death will come home.

Just another windbag trying to make a name for himself. I think I’ll suggest a bill be brought before Congress that makes it illegal to be a deranged, mentally ill, gunmen within 1000 feet of members of Congress. Yeah, that’ll work.

When the horse was never in the barn to begin with, how can he escape?

Tonedeaf, you have a point. But the anti-self-defense lobby has been beating the dead horse of gun control for a long time.

I hope not to be seeing any equine zombies anytime soon.

Wait a minute. These guys are professionals. Big league politicians like Rep. King must know very well the obviously simple logical mistake in the argument behind proposals like this. They’ve been routinely beat over the head with it for years. How can congresspeople be so skilled at getting complex legislation passed and yet intellectually stumble so farcically over this? Have these folks simply been so overcome with emotion that they don’t feel the eggs on their faces?

Deluded so that they believe a lie…

On the other hoof, we have this.

The natural human tendency, especially in this country, is to try to make rational sense out of something that was senseless in the first place. “Oh, if only we had tougher laws to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally deranged, etc….” This is tantamount to keeping booze out of the hands of underaged drinkers. No law I know of has ever prevented this. Many individuals knew the shooter was crazy and dangerous, yet he showed up at the mall with plenty of ammo. Sounds like a broken record, doesn’t it?
