<blockquote><p>Astronomers who have been searching for extraterrestrial intelligence for decades are suddenly saying such an encounter might not be a happy one.</p>
<p>Aliens might destroy life on Earth or plan to eat or enslave humans if they sense our civilization was expanding too rapidly and could harm others, according to a latest study.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>The scenario was brought up in a joint study by Seth Baum, Jacob Haqq-Misra and Shawn Domagal-Goldman.</p>
<p>Researchers say extraterrestrials might behave the way we humans have behaved whenever we have discovered other previously unknown intelligent beings on Earth, like unfamiliar humans or chimpanzees and gorillas.</p>
<p>&#8220;Just as we did to those beings, the extraterrestrials might proceed to kill, infect, dissect, conquer, displace or enslave us, stuff us as specimens for their museums or pickle our skulls and use us for medical research,&#8221; according to the study, which was published in the journal Acta Astronautica.</p>
<p>Why should we worry about aliens? The simple reason is that if they can find us, they would be more advanced than humans.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;A core concern is that ETI will learn of our presence and quickly travel to Earth to eat or enslave us,&#8221; the study says.</p>
<p>The authors speculate that extraterrestrials might try to spread their beliefs through evangelism or to use humans for entertainment.</p>
<p>Just because an ETI civilization holds universalist ethics does not mean that it would never seek our harm. This is because ETI may be quite different from us and could conclude that harming us would help maximize whatever they value intrinsically.</p>
<p>For example, if ETI place intrinsic value on lives, then perhaps they could bring about more lives by destroying us and using our resources more efficiently for other lives. Other forms of intrinsic value may cause a universalist ETI to seek our harm or destruction as long as more value is produced without us than with us.</p>
<p>Aliens also could harm or destroy us if they believe we are a threat to other civilizations. Rapidly expanding civilizations may have a tendency to destroy other civilizations in the process, just as humanity has already destroyed many species on Earth.</p>
<p>Though this scenario might seem unlikely given the likelihood of our technological inferiority relative to other civilizations, we would be at the receiving end if ET thinks that our resources could be used more efficiently to generate or retain other civilizations.</p>
<p>Perhaps ETI is observing rapid and destructive expansion on Earth and could become concerned at our trajectory.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>ETI might prefer that our civilization change its ways to survive, but if it doubts that our course can be changed, it may seek to preemptively destroy us to protect other civilizations from us.</p>
<p>A preemptive strike would be particularly likely in the early phases of our expansion because a civilization may become increasingly difficult to destroy as it continues to expand.</p>
<p>&#8220;Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilizational expansion could be detected by an ETI because our expansion is changing the composition of Earth&#8217;s atmosphere (e.g. via greenhouse gas emissions), which therefore changes the spectral signature of Earth,&#8221; the study&#8217;s authors say,</p>
<p>Human civilization affects ecosystems so strongly that some ecologists have begun calling this epoch of Earth&#8217;s history the anthropocene, a new and unprecedented phase in the planet&#8217;s history.</p>
<p>If the goal is to maximize ecosystem health, then perhaps it would be better if humanity did not exist, or at least if it existed in significantly reduced form. Since at least some humans believe so, invoking universalist ethical principles, then it is likely that ETI might agree.</p>
<p>But since we don&#8217;t know what kind of aliens we will end up meeting, there are certain steps humans should take when making contact, the authors urge. Those steps include not sharing details of our biology and DNA structure, and not appearing as if we are rapidly expanding off the Earth.</p></blockquote>

<p>The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The recent actions of the Tea Party are prompting an exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they&#8217;ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and to agree with Bill O&#8217;Reilly and Glenn Beck.</p>
<p>Canadian border farmers say it&#8217;s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal-rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night.</p>
<p>&#8220;I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,&#8221; said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn&#8217;t have any, he left before I even got a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?&#8221;</p>
<p>In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. He then installed loudspeakers that blared Rush Limbaugh across the fields. &#8220;Not real effective,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The liberals still got through and Rush annoyed the cows so much that they wouldn&#8217;t give any milk.&#8221;</p>
<p>Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons and drive them across the border where they are simply left to fend for themselves.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of these people are not prepared for our rugged conditions,&#8221; an Ontario border patrolman said. &#8220;I found one carload without a single bottle of imported drinking water.</p>
<p>They did have a nice little Napa Valley Cabernet, though.&#8221;</p>
<p>When liberals are caught, they&#8217;re sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about plans being made to build re-education camps where liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR races.</p>
<p>In recent days, liberals have turned to ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have been disguised as senior citizens taking a bus trip to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans in powdered wig disguises, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizens about Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney to prove that they were alive in the &#8217;50s. &#8220;If they can&#8217;t identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we become very suspicious about their age,&#8221; an official said.</p>
<p>Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and are renting all the Michael Moore movies. &#8220;I really feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can&#8217;t support them,&#8221; an Ottawa resident said. &#8220;How many art-history majors does one country need?&#8221;</p>
<p>In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, Vice President Biden met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that the administration would take steps to reassure liberals. A source close to President Obama said, &#8220;We&#8217;re going to have some Paul McCartney and Peter, Paul &amp; Mary concerts. And we might even put some endangered species on postage stamps. The President is determined to reach out,&#8221; he said. The Herald will be interested to see if Obama can actually raise Mary from the dead in time for the concert!</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>On a quick read, the federal court&#8217;s issuance of a temporary injunction against enforcement of the major provisions of the Arizona immigration law appears specious.</p>
<p>In essence, Judge Susan Bolton bought the Justice Department&#8217;s preemption argument — i.e., the claim that the federal government has broad and exclusive authority to regulate immigration, and therefore that any state measure that is inconsistent with federal law is invalid. The Arizona law is completely consistent with federal law. The judge, however, twisted &lt;the&gt;  concept of federal law into federal enforcement practices (or, as it happens, lack thereof). In effect, the court is saying that if the feds refuse to enforce the law the states can&#8217;t do it either because doing so would transgress the federal policy of non-enforcement &#8230; which is nuts.</p></blockquote>
<p>There is much more at the link above, including references to other federal court precedents that the judge seems to have decided to ignore&#8230;  presumably because they would not have led to the decision she appears to want.  (She is a Clinton appointee, and presumably leans left, as essentially all of his appointees did.)</p>
<p>There are other federal laws, laws the enforcement of which requires local law enforcement to be directly involved, and even take initiative, on matters ranging from kidnapping to terrorism to the Mann Act to drugs, literally thousands of laws.</p>
<p>There is no precedent for the federal government to sue to stop a state from enforcing federal law in a constitutional way.  Imagine if local peace officers were not allowed to notice if someone was selling illegal drugs (mostly federal laws), or to stop a kidnapping, or arrest someone carrying a grenade launcher (not illegal according to some state laws, but banned federally for most civilians).  Imagine if local peace officers were not allowed to notice someone carrying a sign advocating the assassination of Obama, or the bombing of a federal facility?</p>
<p>That is the ridiculous position we&#8217;d find ourselves in, if the notion that local peace officers can&#8217;t enforce federal law ever became consistently applied, and that&#8217;s why the judge&#8217;s decision is ridiculous.</p>
<p>This was a PURELY political lawsuit, brought by a president who wants to buy off the Hispanic vote in 2012, even at the cost of the congress in the 2010 midterms, a president who cynically believes that Hispanic voters are in favor of illegal aliens in large numbers.</p>
<p>I hope he is wrong in ascribing such motives to legal Hispanic voters.  If he is right, it will be interesting to see exactly how much other American citizens care about this.  How many who usually don&#8217;t vote can be energized to get to the polls to avoid amnesty (official or unofficial) for illegals?</p>
<p>Not enough, I fear.</p>

The famous physicist recently suggested that we should be wary of contact with extraterrestrials, citing what happened to Native Americans when Europeans landed on their shores. Since any species that could visit us would be far beyond our own technological level, meeting them could be bad news.</p>
<p>Hawking was extrapolating the possible consequences of my day job: a small but durable exercise known as SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.</p>
<p>Although we have yet to detect an alien ping, improvements in technology have encouraged us to think that, if transmitting extraterrestrials are out there, we might soon find them. That would be revolutionary. But some people, Hawking included, sense a catastrophe.</p>
<p>Consider what happens if we succeed. Should we respond? Any broadcast could blow Earth&#8217;s cover, inviting the possibility of attack by a society advanced enough to pick up our signals.</p>
<p>On the face of it, that sounds like a scenario straight out of cheap science fiction. But even if the odds of calamity are small, why gamble?</p>
<p>For three years, this issue has been exercising a group of SETI scientists in the International Academy of Astronautics. The crux of the dispute was an initiative by a few members to proscribe any broadcasts to aliens, whether or not we receive a signal first.</p>
<p>In truth, banning broadcasts would be impractical &#8211; and manifestly too late. We have been inadvertently betraying our presence for 60 years with our television, radio and radar transmissions. The earliest episodes of I Love Lucy have washed over 6000 or so star systems, and are reaching new audiences at the rate of one solar system a day. If there are sentient beings out there, the signals will reach them.</p>
<p>Detecting this leakage radiation won&#8217;t be that difficult. Its intensity decreases with the square of the distance, but even if the nearest aliens were 1000 light years away, they would still be able to detect it as long as their antenna technology was a century or two ahead of ours.</p>
<p>This makes it specious to suggest that we should ban deliberate messages on the grounds that they would be more powerful than our leaked signals. Only a society close to our level of development would be able to pick up an intentional broadcast while failing to notice TV and radar. And a society at our level is no threat.</p>
<p>The flip side is that for any alien society that could be dangerous, a deliberate message makes no difference. Such a society could use its own star as a gravitational lens, and even see the glow from our street lamps. Hawking&#8217;s warning is irrelevant.</p>
<p>Such considerations motivated the SETI group at the International Academy of Astronautics to reject a proscription of transmissions to the sky. It was the right decision. The extraterrestrials may be out there, and we might learn much by discovering them, but it is paranoia of a rare sort that would shutter the Earth out of fear that they might discover us.</p></blockquote>

<p><a href="http://www.harmonicminer.com/wordpress/2009/02/18/the-next-great-awakening-part-4/" target="_blank">I&#8217;m not deeply worried</a> that ET wants to come to Earth and eat us or something.  But if ET is out there, and can get here, and wants to get here, I really doubt that it would be out of a sense of altruism.  What if ET is at the same moral level as the Aztecs?  Maybe they believe in sacrificing low-level cultures (that would be us) to appease the Dark Energy God.</p>
<p>I mean, they could always just send a nice note, if all they want is to be pen pals.  And everyone knows it isn&#8217;t a good idea to meet in person with people you just met on Facebook&#8230;.  let alone give them your home address.</p>

The cries of outrage and the accusations of racism seem to be coming from everywhere.  In fact there is a clear attempt to couch this entire subject under the banner of race and racism, which should come as no surprise since that particular accusation has become quite a useful tool, both to squelch disagreement and dissent as well as to promote particular political agendas.</p>
<p>So, for those who feel as though our laws on immigration should not be enforced.  For those who feel that illegal immigrants should be granted a path to citizenship without obeying the existing laws.  For those who feel as though there is a compelling reason to ignore the laws of the land with respect to immigration I have a couple of simple questions:</p>
<p>#1: Which laws shall we enforce and which ones shall we ignore?</p>
<p>#2: Who gets to decide the answer to question #1?</p>

<blockquote><p>Congress has heard testimony estimating that more than two-thirds of all births in Los Angeles public hospitals, and more than half of all births in that city, and nearly 10 percent of all births in the nation in recent years, have been to mothers who are here illegally. Graglia seems to establish that there is no constitutional impediment to Congress ending the granting of birthright citizenship to those whose presence here is &#8220;not only without the government&#8217;s consent but in violation of its law.&#8221; </p></blockquote>
<p>George Will&#8217;s piece, linked above, gives a nice history of the 14th Amendment, and explains clearly why it should not be interpreted to mean that all babies of illegal aliens are automatically US citizens.&nbsp; But somehow, I don&#8217;t think Congress is likely to act on this anytime soon, since the Democrats want to turn as many illegals as possible into voters&#8230;  for them.&nbsp; That&#8217;s why they are loathe to enforce our borders, they are for same day registration/voting and &#8220;motor voter&#8221; laws, and are only too happy to accept the support of illegal alien activist organizations.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure the Democrats mourn the passing of ACORN, which was famous for finding ways for illegals to vote, not to mention evade taxes and other laws.</p>
<p>So we won&#8217;t see a Congressional reinterpretation of the 14th Amendment anytime soon.&nbsp; But read all of Will&#8217;s piece.&nbsp; It&#8217;s essential information for the next time someone tries to convince you that it makes any kind of sense Constitutionally for anchor babies to be automatic US citizens.</p>
