About us

harmonicminer @ 8:58 am

I’m Phil Shackleton (also known as harmonicminer), a composer/arranger of music, professor of music, and generally curious person. The name of the blog (and my handle, harmonicminer) is a bit of a joke, because I don’t think the “harmonic minor scale” is a very good explanation for most minor mode music. Plus, every musician who knows me is aware that I’m always searching for new (to me) harmonies. So: harmonicminer.

Generally, I come from the “center-right” in the political/social spectrum. You would know that after reading a few posts, so I’m up front about it. I do try to be reasonable, fair, and accurate in my use of sources, and I try to be rational in where I let them lead me. You can comment on my failures at that, if you wish.

My interests include music, politics, religion, theology, philosophy, science, space travel, economics and quite a bit else.

Comments are welcome, but moderated. Leaving a comment up doesn’t mean I agree with it, just that I don’t think it’s obscene.

Chris Russell introduced me to this site. I’m very impressed by your bio. Every other year in our Discovery class at Lake Avenue Church, we do a two week study in church history — far too little to really learn much, but it’s much more than most believers are aware of! Everything I’ve read of yours is very thoughtful and knowledgeable. Keep up the good work.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a German police student at the Police College in Villingen-Schwenningen. At the moment I am writing my diploma thesis about the terrorist attacks on the tube on seven seven.

Therefore I would like to ask for your permission to use the following photo/photos on your website.
