When I told her I didn't have any money, she simply asked, "can't you just go to the store and write a check for some?" Or like the person who can't believe that they've overdrawn their checking account when they still have checks in the book. I really do think, though, that a great many folks are convinced that since SS and Medicare have been around for such a long time and money has been borrowed for such a long time (generations, actually) that those who are running the system surely know how to keep it going and they keep telling us to trust them - so we do. After all, isn't this they way things have always been? It’s like when my daughter was small and asked for something.
