Sam, you're absolutely right, of course, a point I tried to make here. But "middle class values" is a pornographic phrase to the modern Left.

BTW, send me email and I'll send back how to embed a
quote.
I'd put it here, but everytime I type the string that does it, it turns into a quote!

I think the interesting point is that the school specifically pushes middle-class values. To quote (and, again, I don't know how to create a quote in a comment), "The schools create a disciplined, orderly and demanding counterculture to inculcate middle-class values." That's the way to go! But, of course, to say there is something inherently better about middle-class values over lower-class is unthinkable in a pluralistic and standardless society.

Thanks Sam. You know, of course, that the education lobby is directly opposed to school experiments like this. And it's clear from the article (though not directly stated) that some control is applied to who is admitted. A 39th percentile entering average is still pretty high, actually, compared to what many individual public schools must contend with. And it's clear that they aren't keeping really troubled kids in situations where they will drag back the other kids. The troubled kids are a tragedy, and we need to find ways to do what we can for them... but we must stop letting them determine the floor AND the ceiling for other students.

There is one other "squid ink" bit, the one that compares the performance of these kids to "white students" in public schools. The proper comparison would be to "white kids in special charter schools that work extra hard." I doubt the average of even these special schools would measure up to that, for the reasons stated in my piece above.

But anyone interested in "social justice" should be demanding schools like this for every minority kid in the country. That won't happen, of course: the education lobby HATES charter schools, any kind of school choice, anything that juggles the easy career status quo and adjusts the power structure of the teachers unions and the state educational bureaucracies.

Prediction: those minority students who graduate from these special schools will have a MUCH lower criminal conviction rate than the overall population of their peers. Now, that's "social justice," just not the kind lefty activists are working for.
